Battle Kitty is an animated series based on Matt Layzell's Instagram webcomic named The Adventures of Kitty & Orc. It premiered on Netflix on April 19, 2022.
Plot[]
The series takes place in a futuristic-medieval hybrid universe, where warriors and creatures co-exist. It follows Kitty, a determined kitten willing to take on challenges no matter the limits, and his friend Orc, a friendly but cautious humanoid goblin as they push through several zones to reach the Ancient Ruins.
Why They Never Quit[]
- It touches and explores Netflix Interactive series like none other has before. Instead of relying on choices like common TV specials based on popular franchises, it actually takes the time and care to be like a real videogame, with each episode running at a same pace as most videogames would.
- Choice Provisions, a video game developer formerly known as Gaijin Games, who are known for their Bit.Trip series, were involved in this, which explains the online multiplayer aesthetic the series marks off. It's like you're watching a cartoon AND playing a game at once!! Huh!
- To say the humor is funny wouldn't describe how funny it really is. It manages to go over-the-top and exaggerates comedy without trying too hard, which may remind you of certain animated videos on the internet (mostly Newgrounds, since they're notable for this kind of effect).
- Kitty is just WAY too adorable and goofy. What makes him more lovable is that, despite his sarcastic and monotonous voice, he never lets anything get to the best of him, and somehow ends up succeeding in the most unexpected and stupidly smart ways possible. Orc, likewise, is just as lovable as Kitty and is responsible for being influenced by his own encouragements, let alone his questioning never hold him back too much.
- ZaZa is a very entertaining and sassy villain, as well as her sidekick, Merchin. Oddly enough, they manage to get along very well with each other, which is really rare for a cartoon like this. Other likable characters may include the safety person during the races.
- Wonderful soundtracks composed by Max Coburn which matches the bright and upbeat atmosphere of the interactive toon.
- The animation is good, but not just good. The facial expressions may reminisce some minor anime elements (such as the occasional sweat drops), and the bouncy movements are very fluid, thanks to the work of both Plastic Wax and Unreal Engine.
- While the art style does seem bland, it looks very interesting and wacky (in an amazing way) resembling certain webcomics, hence why this was made.
- The power-up section when Kitty battles enemies pay a lot of homage to some video games. The weapon choices are distinctive too, such as the Big Head Bow. Be honest, who wouldn't want that kind of ability?
Bad Qualities[]
- Some episodes can last too long. But then again it is meant to since the show is presented in the form of a videogame.
- Aforementioned in WTNQ#6, the art style is quite bland as everything is round and soft like most series.
- A LOT of awkward moments. Kitty, for one, can be weird in some scenes.
- ZaZa can be annoying most of the time, even if it's her character.
- The show ends on a cliffhanger, and there will not likely be a season 2

- Matt Layzell, the creator of the series, along with his brother Paul, teamed up with FOX's Animation Domination High-Def to produce an animated short, Future Travel.
