Hazbin Hotel

Hazbin Hotel is a 2024 American adult animated musical TV series created by Vivienne “VivziePop” Medrano who also created the webcomic ZooPhobia and Hazbin Hotel’s spin-off web series Helluva Boss. It focuses on Princess Charlie Morningstar of Hell who opens her own hotel in an effort to redeem sinners in order to prevent the annual extermination campaign put in place by Heaven with the help of her friends including the mysterious Radio Demon Alastor.

Why It Rocks

1. Most of its characters are likable including Charlie, Vaggie, Angel Dust, Husk, Sir Pentious, and Lucifer.
2. The main highlight of the show has to be its musical numbers which are usually two per episode but are still enjoyable and memorable.
3. The Three Vees are decent villains, especially Vox.
4. It talks about serious subject matter like sexual abuse and trauma as seen in the ADDICT music video and in the fourth episode “Masquerade” which is considered to be one of its best episodes due to not sugar coating it or downplaying it.
5. Interesting lore which includes Alastor and Vox’s past relationship and especially the mystery that is Charlie’s mother and Lucifer’s wife: Lilith.
6. Many of the Demons and Angels have great designs with a wide array of colors like red or yellow and are based on things like animals, objects, humanoids or supernatural beings and folklore in general.
7. Its voice acting is top-notch for the most part with Alastor being one of the best examples.
8. Its whole aesthetic is based on things like Tim Burton’s works, Invader Zim, Christianity, the horror genre, demonology, and Disney animated films, especially the musical ones from the Disney Renaissance era.
9. It’s unique in the fact that it portrays Demons and Angels differently compared to the usual depiction of the former as antagonistic and evil and the latter as protagonists and forces of good.
10. Its characters have understandable motives like Charlie preventing the genocide of her people or Carmilla Carmine not wanting her daughters or all of Hell to be put in danger.
11. Its comedy is decent for the most part with Sir Pentious and Niffty being the biggest examples.
12. All the animal characters and pets including Fat Nuggets, KeeKee, and Razzle and Dazzle are all very cute and lovable.

Bad Qualities

1. The fandom tends to be controversial and petty at times especially when it comes to things like voodoo, Emily’s skin tone or VivziePop herself.
2. The portrayal of Lucifer being an innocent person who created evil on accident received some backlash from conservatives and religious groups.
3. It’s humor is said to rely too much on swearing and sex jokes although since it was inspired by shows like South Park and Seth Rogen’s movies it could be considered understandable since it IS an adult show.
4. Some unlikable characters which include: Katie Killjoy, Adam and Lute (depending on your view), Sera (depending on your view), Lilith (depending on your view), Susan, and especially Valentino.
5. The V’s didn’t appear much in the first season despite being said to be the main villains although they’re set to appear more in season 2.
6. Its first season only got 8 episodes with season 2 taking 2 years to release although it isn’t that long.
7. Angel Dust as a character has received criticism from some people due to the fact that while he is abused, he ultimately comes across as Unintentionally Unsympathetic as he’s shown throughout the first half of season one to sexually harass Husk who clearly doesn’t reciprocate Angel’s feelings with it being played for laughs with him generally being considered the most controversial character on the show. Sir Pentious getting raped offscreen in episode 6 also didn’t sit well with some people due to it contrasting to Angel’s abuse and many feeling that it belittles rape for comedy.
