Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi is an American-Japanese animated comedy television series created by Sam Register, which ran on Cartoon Network from 2004 to 2006.

Why It Rocks

  1. Despite its awful animation, it had great art style.
  2. It served as an awesome throwback to classic cartoons from the golden age of cartoons.
  3. Unlike Hannah Montana, there was more to the show than just teenage girls as pop rock stars.
  4. Has a number of CatDog writers.
  5. The theme song was extremely AWESOME.
  6. Pop culture references that are surprisingly understandable.
  7. The Bob Clampett-style slapstick is insanely hilarious, similar to Tom and Jerry, Ed, Edd n Eddy, The Ren & Stimpy Show, and Heckle and Jeckle.
  8. Yumi and Ami are very cute protagonists, as their character designs are pure adorable, to become both of Japan's cutest tomboys.
  9. Cool anime references.
  10. Tex Avery-style fourth wall breaks, similar to Looney Tunes and Chowder.
  11. It literally had a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Float in 2005.
  12. The animation for season 3 is terrific.
  13. Despite being a cult following in the USA and Canada, it became very successful in Japan.
  14. The backgrounds are more stylized, similar to the UPA cartoons of the 1940s and 50s.
  15. The cutesy musical montages are great.
  16. The show uses a unique blend of Flash Animation and Anime combined.
  17. Very catchy songs by Puffy AmiYumi.
  18. The voice acting is really good.
  19. The show has good life lessons and morals.
  20. It was nominated for three Annie Awards and had it’s own merchandise line.
  21. The show has a lot of pretty colors and appealing backgrounds.
  22. Ami and Yumi can speak in both American and Japanese.
  23. It uses clever jokes and Chuck Jones-style gags.
  24. The show features cameos by the real Puffy AmiYumi themselves every now and then.
  25. Unlike Ed, Edd n Eddy, there's no toilet humor. (With the small exception of Kaz flushing himself down the toilet in one episode).

Bad Qualities

  1. Only one gross-out joke with Kaz being flushed down the toilet, was pure disgusting.
  2. The animation was idiotic in seasons 1 and 2, but got better in season 3.
  3. Few of these episodes are incredibly stupid.
  4. Kaz can be pretty annoying and unlikable sometimes.
  5. There were plans for a fourth season, but Cartoon Network cancelled the show before season 4 began production.
  6. The live-action segments are forgettable and pointless, but luckily, they were removed from the second season.
  7. The show premiered in 2004, but was cancelled just two years later (likely due to a management shakeup) and Cartoon Network didn't even acknowledge the show's existence until their 20th anniversary in 2012.
