Sharkdog is an American children's CG-animated streaming television series. Created by Singaporean human Jacinth Tan Yi Ting, the series premiered on Netflix on September 3, 2021. A special, titled Sharkdog's Fintastic Halloween, (later retitled Sharkdog Burns in Hell in some regions) was released on October 15, 2021.
A second season premiered on June 30, 2022.
Plot[]
This show is about a ten-year-old painter named Max and his best friend Sharkdog, who is half-shark, half-dog, and all appetite. Blissfully unaware of his own strength, stealth and general sharkiness, Sharkdog often leaves a trail of chaos in his wake.
Why It Rocks[]
- To start off, this series is about a boy who finds a shark/dog hybrid. Several characters are played realistically.
- Max and his friends are nice to each other often, as they helped Max keep Sharkdog a secret in Season 1.
- Clever writing and humor.
- Great CGI animation done in Singapore.
- Sharkdog is incredibly cute.
- Very catchy theme song performed by Roley Pescato.
- Excellent voice acting from Liam Mitchell as Max, Dee Bradley Baker as Sharkdog, and everyone else in the cast.
Bad Qualities[]
- The series' biggest problem is that it encourages lying and dishonesty to children. See BQ#4 below.
- The premise is bland and unrealistic. There is already a show about a 10-year-old with a pet shark, and even that show handled the concept more realistically.
- Unlikeable characters, as well as likeable characters having flaws.
- Max is a very dishonest liar, as he constantly lies to his parents that "nothing is happening" and tries to keep Sharkdog a secret, especially in Season 1.
- In one episode, Olivia takes Sharkdog outside, even though Max ordered her not to, and when Max calls her on the phone, she outright lies to him, telling him they're watching a movie, when they are doing no such thing!
- Royce also tried to exploit Sharkdog in "Green Around the Gills." Sure, he faked an illness, but come on!
- Max's dad is an absolute coward at times.
- Both Captain Quigly and Dennis is the worst characters in the series, as the former is an ichthyophilic and always slaves her manservant, calls everyone bad names, and tries to hunt for Sharkdog. This is illegal, as sharks are a protected species. The latter hates Max for unknown reasons, and calls them bad, insulting, fish-related names. He also tries to get Max defeated and broken by exposing his pet Sharkdog, and his mother is nothing but a money hungry gold digger whose son is a whiny, xenophobic brat.
Reception[]
The series received a 6.1/10 rating on iMDB. It did, however, draw several complaints about Max's dishonesty to his parents.
Trivia[]
- A horror movie by Billy Sewer and Universal Pictures is currently in the works, and it stars Tyler James Williams and Shark Puppet as Sharkdog.
